About the event

We are excited to welcome Casey Neill to the Cabin Creek Stage!

"(Neill's) songs mask their complexities beneath a simple, singalong-worthy surface... these swimming waters have serious depth." - Rolling Stone

Casey Neill is a songwriter from Portland, Oregon performing high energy indie folk, infused with haunting melodies and weather beaten narratives. A prolific road warrior since the late 90s, Neill tours throughout the USA, Japan, and Europe, performing at venues such as Town Hall in New York, San Francisco's Great American Music Hall, and the Newport Folk Festival. His new album Sending Up Flares was recorded with his band The Norway Rats and released by Fluff & Gravy Records in September 2023. Created amidst chaos and uncertainty, these songs offer a lifeline to a world in need of balance, shot through with stories about resolve, resilience, and wonder.

"Perhaps what I dig most about Sending Up Flares is its seductively contemplative nature as a whole... Slip on the headphones, drive to the starlit Mojave in your mind, and look upon the warm desert sand...It’s hard to pin down the exact genre of the record. ‘Neo-Realist,’ ‘Indie Folk,’ Post-Colonial-Coalminer Stargaze. I don’t care what you call it, I just like it! " - Americana Highways

The songs on 'Sending Up Flares' were co-written with producer and guitarist Chet Lyster (eels) and feature long time members of The Norway Rats - Jenny Conlee (The Decemberists) on keyboards and accordion, Jesse Emerson on bass, as well as a guest vocal from Sleater-Kinney's Corin Tucker on the jittery "Jumping Out Of My Skin". Neill is often a side guitarist in The Minus 5 and bandleader Scott McCaughey turns up on a song they co-wrote to add free time drums and while R.E.M.’s Peter Buck plays ghostly e-bow lines. Since the release of Sending Up Flares, Neill spent the Fall of 2023 touring with the band and solo across the US and UK, including a run of shows opening for The Indigo Girls.

Critic Marco Rivera described it best for music blog Splendid: “Be it through raucous rockers, fragile acoustic ballads, passionate bursts of punk fury or soulful touches of Irish folk, Neill's narrative talent and concern for real people's struggles stand out. (Neill) evokes an epic feel that fits perfectly with the implicit grandiosity of this emotional material, delivered with a raspy, affectionate voice that recalls Life's Rich Pageant-era Michael Stipe. The results are so evocative, you'll be tempted to steep further in these memories, the better to share Casey Neill's particular blend of personal and historical experience.”
